The Godfather is a crime novel by the American writer Mario Pozzo. The novel, first published by GP Putnam Sons in 1969, tells the story of a mafia family led by Watto Corleone in New York City. The young, up-and-coming writer Pozzo wanted to write a version of his great American novel that would also perform well on the movie screen. At the same time, during the war, the nation perceives the mafia as the greatest American hero, not the cowboys. According to author Peter Barth, America’s perception of the mafia as a positive citizen is what allowed Pozzo to bring Father Goddard into American society.
